Do you want me to list my pending reviews to make you feel better? :P Wonder why you're reading Bulgakov in Spanish? Romance languages are even more distant than Germanic ones from works written in Russian and other Slavic languages, I've found. Or at least that's the case with Goran Petrovi?'s work. He's not yet available in English, so I've been reading in parallel text the Serbian (in Cyrillic script, no less!) and Spanish his 2000 book, La mano de la buena fortuna. Very good, but the way each language structures the adjectives and sentence order is vastly different. His Spanish translator took a lot of liberties in order to create a coherent text. Wouldn't be surprised if the same is true for Bulgakov's translator.

Mostly because I hadn't found him in the library (they have it, obviously, but was checked out) before leaving, nor in the local bookstore, so then I was in Spain and figured I should start reading him while still there, and only found him in Spanish. But also because I need all the practice I can get in Spanish, and because I can't read it in the original language anyway, so who knows which translation will be the best. My experience with the Dutch translation of Doctor Zhivago was rather bad, anyway.

A larger problem with my reading him in Spanish is that it means I lose out on the finer details and on the style, as there are still some words I don't get. So at some point I should probably read it in English or Dutch after all, or reread it when my Spanish vocabulary is larger.

Well, for the most part, the Spanish translations I've read of Slavic writers have been decent to good. I prefer Faraldo's Spanish translation of Sapkowski to Stok's English translation, in part because he manages to find a good, consistent style to the narratives. That's not always the case with other translators, I fear, but it does help when most of the translators into Spanish seem to be writers themselves; they seem to find decent style replacements to fit the language.

As for the vocabulary, there'll always be words and expressions that test the limits. Still finding that to be the case after 9 years and nearly 400 books in Spanish.

But apparently I've learned enough to be able to read Catalan with very little effort, though.
