It sounds like you are talking exclusively about the Gita. The Mahabharata does not emphasize the futility of war. Quite the opposite - the Pandavas have to fight to regain their kingdom.
Nor is it something that the victors come out of happy. The Mahabharatha (I use the h, because it is not the "t" sound of "tip", for instance. We have four t-sounds, and four d-sounds, which is why sometimes I trip over my English, it is very annoying) speaks of war as something that a great many people - the Kauravas included - work very hard, very deviously and very martyrdly to avoid. And then they do it. It's unavoidable by this point, close on to inevitable after what came before.
But the Padavas - having fought their righteous, necessary, inevitable war, pretty much went home wishing they'd been brought up by parents who taught them all to share. Killing your cousins is not fun.
