Ehrm. Do you mean fantasy? jh Send a noteboard - 20/06/2010 10:24:34 PM

I finished Magician recently, and I'm looking for something else to read. Instead of raiding the book store and looking for something, I thought I'd ask which books you consider to be spectacular.

I'm not looking for a book that has any particular outstanding single characteristic such as a contrived plot, deep philosophy or detailed world-building. I'm looking for a book that destroyed your life for the time that you read it - because you couldn't put it down, and afterwards you put it down and went 'wow'.

Thanks!

Because if you don't, I would suggest Cryptonomicon by Stephenson. Or Red Mars by Robinson. Lord of Light by Zelazny is really good too. The Shadow of the Wind, by Zafon might fit the bill.

With more fantastic elements: The Secret History of Moscow by Sedia, or The Meq by Cash are interesting books which may or may not produce the result you ask for.

Let's just say it makes an impact. - 21/06/2010 06:22:10 PM 785 Views
It honestly had very little impact on me one way or another. - 22/06/2010 12:13:24 AM 811 Views
I really don't think it's that you're stupid. - 22/06/2010 02:23:50 AM 822 Views
I enjoyed it. The absurdism--not all that unlike Vonnegut in many instances--made for a lot of fun. - 22/06/2010 02:50:49 AM 837 Views

Pale Fire by Nabakov. Or Lolita for that matter. *NM* - 21/06/2010 08:22:56 PM 385 Views
Pale Fire was excellent. Especially for people who enjoy when Frost is mocked. - 22/06/2010 12:49:38 AM 809 Views
