Maybe A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book -- I did not love everything about it, but it definitely left me feeling like I had not been breathing properly, which is also true for the two above.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel by Susanna Clarke had the same effect.

And Dumas' musketeer books.
