However, you could take a look at le clézio and see if you like any of his books, I liked le chercheur de tresor, myself.

Really, though, your classes are not going to cover enough jules verne. Can't go wrong there. Easy to read, and quite a lot of them. (well. I should admit I have only ever read two of his books in french)
