I came across something interesting today, inspired by Andrew Collins on BBC 6Music. I'm reading Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea quartet for the first time and I'm having a little trouble with it.
Essentially, for those who didn't hear the show, the theme running through Andrew Collins' radio show today was spawned by the new Robin Hood film. Dr. Morris of ER fame is a 'merry man' in the new film and Collins noticed that whilst it didn't ruin the film for him it certainly altered how he watched it, i.e. whenever Morris was onscreen he suddenly remembered it was a film. He then got listeners to email in other examples of this.
SO...(back to the subject), as I read Earthsea, the main character so far is Ged. I'm having trouble with this because one of my best friends' nickname (or Use-name I suppose to keep it in context) is Ged. Consequently, unless I'm concentrating very hard indeed, I see Ged as an extremely attractive young woman in my head instead of...you know...how he actually is meant to be in the book.
I suppose the point of this thread is just me wondering if anyone else has this issue with other books or if it's just me?

When a book uses a catch phrase from our day and world, I find it jarring. *NM*
