i'm of the opinion that there should not be "artistic license" taken with such a long-standing story

unless you are contemplating its appearance in your bookshelf or lovingly caressing your copy of the book with your eyes in some other form.
Seriously, there is just too much nonsense in that movie, mostly but not exclusively in the battle scenes. And most of what isn't nonsense is sentimental, which isn't that great either. Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring are much better.
and the whole scene at osgilliath, and much of RotK were nothing more than "artistic license" imho.

Interesting - and rather appropriate, as I'm watching RotK.

Does it help if watching it didn't improve my opinion of it?

I mostly agree about the first two, but RotK just has too much silliness.
