Derrida? I know I, as the author of that post, "am dead," but I was aiming more for Kierkegaard.

After all, if we are to understood that "the thing is to find a truth which is true for me, to find the idea for which I can live and die," then what we can see in Hodor is, at first, a rejection of societal customs by way of his self-implied refusal to communicate--his lack of agency illustrates the essential meaninglessness of inter-personal interaction and focuses it entirely on the intra-personal.
That much is obvious, and I think my asserting that by simply glossing over it that was confusing Tash, who clearly saw through to the second level. What lies beneath the surface of Hodor (of course this metaphor falls apart fairly quickly, as Hodor is quintessentially a non-dimensional character, whose caricatured simplicity increases the pathos of Martin's message) is a highly ironic criticism of our sympathies towards those who reject society. Objectivist overtones are immediately apparent here, with the rejection of the individual who adds little to society.

"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."
