Calibre doesn't convert from AZW files, Amazon's format

That's the main thing (well, that and the price) holding me back from buying a sony reader vs. a Kindle. I won't buy either until this format fight is over with a clear victor or a compromise of some sort. I like buying my books from Amazon, and it saddens me that there's no way to read them on something other than the kindle.
The story gets even more pathetic when you check out the wikipedia article that says, "Amazon owns Mobipocket, and the Kindle AZW file format and DRM scheme are almost identical to the Mobipocket file format and DRM scheme..."
Mobi files can be easily converted by calibre. What a racket, sheesh!
