His style doesn't appeal to me as much, unfortunately Larry Send a noteboard - 22/04/2010 09:17:21 PM
I like his style - it reminds me of a symphony, especially Gustav Holsts' the planets. Each thought and POV occurs in a greater context, but each instrument contributes to this meta-level context.

It's not as jarring as "One POV per character per chapter" or some other similarly straight-forward arrangements.

I especially appreciate this with characters that seem so incredibly MINOR but whose contributions become amazingly important in the fullness of time in future volumes, such as Reverend Mother Tertius Eileen Anteac or Sister Quintinius Violet Chenoeh.

This series taught me that sci-fi can be more than just sword and sorcery shlock fiction.

However, I won't argue that the overall effect is to create a story that despite its annoying mechanical elements is drawing me in more and more. Partway into God-Emperor of Dune and I am reminded why I had decided that one might have been co-equal at least to the first in terms of interesting motifs.
Illusions fall like the husk of a fruit, one after another, and the fruit is experience. - Narrator, Sylvie
