I just have to say that was amazingly well-written and well thought out.
As for your question itself, whether it was too easy for them, and would it be better (or more realistic, or more mature) if the character had to actually commit...harsh acts, for the greater good, I see what you're saying. I think there's still opportunity for characters to have to make that choice, so hopefully your wishes will come true!
