I remember thinking the same thing when I read that passage!

I really can't see Vanin having a long-term working relationship with an AS; it just doesn't fit his nature and behavior through the books.

Here is how I imagine it going:

- Vanin uses route for smuggling.
- Some AS uses same route for secretive travel.
- Vanin and AS meet in said pass.
- Each knows what the other is doing; neither wants to be caught
- AS makes tenuous friendship by telling Vanin about moutain geology; Vanin just tries not to have any further dealings with said As
