personally I think it's part of the Ta'veren thing

Mehtan is from Knife of Dreams, pgs 296-298 of my edition, Chapter 12, A Manufactory. He was the Seanchan clerk who vomited beetles til he "deflated".
Adrin is from The Gathering Storm, pgs 182-184 in my edition, Chapter 11, The Death of Adrin. He was the Saldean soldier who was guarding the manor house Rand was at, who complained of the heat and then had tar burst out of his face that started the manor on fire and led to the scene that's depicted on the cover.
So my question is, what happened to these two? Was it a Bubble of Evil? The Pattern breaking down?
I personally don't like the fact that these guys were struck by something that is impossible to Heal or prevent. But just because I don't like it, doesn't mean it's not true. I know the Pattern is malfunctioning, and these guys could just be unlucky. But I think there's more to it than that.
I think Mehtan and Adrin were Darkfriends. The DO has power over those that are sworn to him, we've seen this with Shaidar Haran, and Sanderson has mentioned it in conjunction with Verin. I think that when the DO's essence seeps out into the world, it is attracted to Ta'veren and the souls of those who are sworn to him (though some do end up striking randomly, like at the AS camp, and rumors at other armies). I think that an unfortunate side effect of swearing to the Great Lord is that the more power he gains, the more chance you have of dying in strange ways. I don't think the DO meant to kill these people, I think his essence just seeped out and offed them.
Alternatively, they are Darkfriends but it's not the DO's power that killed them, it's the Pattern trying to protect Perrin and Rand, and using the breakdown of the rules to its advantage. It's getting rid of threats to the 3 ta'veren by swapping their enemy's body parts with all kinds of nasty things.
So what do you think? Were these two (and perhaps the peddler that Mat saw sink into the ground) innocent bystanders who caught a bubble of evil attracted to the ta'verenness? Or were these people vile darkfriends who got what they deserved? Does the DO's power over his minions extend this far?

In each instance, the ta'veren present was essentially "off-course" thus causing the Pattern to work harder to pull threads in line to get back on track

I think bubbles of evil were attracted to Rand because of his mindset

Heh. I'm talking about people who die though. But it probably is just ta'vereness/crazyness. *NM*
