I tried to relate it to LotR but the only thing she knew about it was there was a "little monster guy"(Gollum) and that Orlando Bloom was in the movies.
with 12 books + a prequel in New Spring it's never going to be easy... I'd just tell her it's epic fantasy, along the lines of LOTR (make her watch Orlando Bloom). If she's not interested after the LOTR movies I doubt she ever will be.
