I doubt that we would see a stick floating in mid-air except the Channeler created flows of air to hold it. In scenario 2 that would mean that the stick starts dropping to the ground (and posibly bouncing away so that your question becomes irrelevant)while the gateway closes. And I think that the gateway would close as far as possible with the remains becoming tied off and rather useless until the stick is pulled out.
In scenario 1 I believe that it would work out as you suggested, similar to Rand and Aviendha.
