It's all kind of irrelevant. Cannoli Send a noteboard - 08/01/2010 11:28:46 PM
In the end it comes down to risks, I guess. Rand can't hide away from Aes Sedai all the time on the off-chance that the emissary is covered in sa'angreal. He's probably reasonably sure that he can handle three women in most situations. Taim is even more dismissive of facing three women. Maybe he's stupid though - Elayne is a very strong woman and even worse, she has a turtle angreal. He might have found himself in for a nasty surprise.

If you were a high strength male, how would you agree to meet groups of potentially threatening females? Would you meet any group of less than thirteen? Would you also stop at three or scoff at three?

I wouldn't let the strength issue be a concern. Take other precautions to nuetralize any possible advantages. Rand is too handicapped by his other "female danger" issues to have crossbowmen in the room warded by Folded Light ready to shoot at his secret signal or lack of restraining command or some other sensible precaution. The problem with the Power is that people get too fixated on it and think of everything in terms of matching up strength. How much of the Power you can weild does not mean nearly as much as what you do with it. Taim didn't care about the strength of the sisters because he was going to win any fight that started. Elayne & co formed the link because the constraints of the situation limited their options, but Taim & co were not going to make Moghedian's mistake and stand around arm-wrestling. They think in terms of combat, and would have done something against the women themselves. They also know they are probably stronger, angreal or no, and a link of so few women would have a hard time holding all of them.

Also, bear in mind that Elayne's perception of his words was not necessarily right. Why would Taim put emphasis on the word Aes Sedai? Maybe because of Rand's orders about harming Aes Sedai. I think it more likely he was warning his men against twitchy trigger fingers, because that would get them in trouble with the Dragon Reborn - by drawing his scrutiny to their clique, if nothing else.
