I just think it's hilarious that the debate turned to trying to justify mass murder based upon the plausibility of events in a fantasy series (a fantasy series with deus ex machine times a hundred nonetheless).
It's a fantasy series. If the author desired to, any number of random event could have happened but the author didn't want to - he wanted something to be done for plot-related reasons. That doesn't mean the author made a convincing case that the outcome was necessary.
I don't think it is that surprising that others would give other possible methods with you trying to explain why you believe your actions were justified.
I'm not convinced it was either necessary nor justified, and the OP didn't convince me of that.
