The trojans or their allies may have truly fled to Italy and become the Etruscans (there is evidence of Anatolian influences) but somehow I think that Northwest France would be a stretch. Of course the historical Troy may have imported some tin (to make bronze) from Cornwall as well as other spots, so who knows.

I agree that Avalon was probably the primary influence for RJ's choice, so the real question is what it meant for him.

I assume, as a minimum, Arthurian associations with the Lady of the Lake and the magical island.

But there's probably more.
