Verin lying and Moiraine verifying that she lied was a huge clue...a huge glaring clue... and yet hardly anyone(myself included) took it at face value.
I had always thought it odd that in her farewell letter, Moiraine tells Rand to mistrust Verin as much as he mistrusts Alviarin. Did she suspect Verin of being Black Ajah? Or was Moiraine's suspiscion based on Verin's figuring out her and Siuan's plans for Rand back in TGH? Did she suspect Verin had a hand in Siuan being deposed? And I'm still not sure of what Moiraine truly knew about Alviarin. Another suspiscion, or did she know Alviarin was Black? That Moiraine singled those two out always bothered me, but perhaps Moiraine did suspect the truth (or, the half-truth) about Verin, but didn't realize Verin was a 'double-agent'.
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo.
