What I like about Egwene al'Vere BlackAdder Send a noteboard - 02/09/2009 02:52:54 AM
First off, I am glad to see this post in support of Egwene al'Vere. It warms my heart to know I've joined the right fansite.

Now, Egwene al'Vere is a very strong young woman. Her latest penance within the White Tower is a remarkable example of this young flower's coming of age. Why, I would even argue that Knife of Dreams is, on one level, a buildungsroman on Egwene al'Vere. What other character in the series would have the courage to pretend to be an Amyrlin in the White Tower itself, AND succeed in converting the (useless, albeit) novices? Every successful rebellion has to start from the bottom-up. What other character in the series is better suited for the stole? We know that Egwene al'Vere is from Emond's Field, which is the Heartland of the WoT world, so her value judgements are correct ones. The only other contenders really are Nynaeve al'Meara (who will be too busy making out with Lan Mandragoran) and Elayne Trakand (who will be too busy making out with Rand al'Thor, if it fits into Rand al'Thor's romantic schedule). The One Power strength of these three women puts them on a level far above any other Aes Sedai, so of course they will be put in the highest leadership positions. That is just how things work in the White Tower. Finally, what other character in the series had anything worthwhile happen to them in Crossroads of Twilight? Surely, that is not an achievement to be taken lightly.

Don't let her standard lacrimatic response to hardship fool you. Everyone in WoT cries. Except Cadsuane Mehlaidrin, of course. And the Forsaken. Oh and, yeah, the Aiel Wise Ones. And, actually, forget that second sentence.

Reprinting an oldie:

6. She's sensitive.
She cries every time she gets spanked. This is a useful technique that makes people like her afterwards. For Rand to get the support from people who beat him that Egwene gets, Verin has to secretly Compel them to swear fealty to him. Egwene has no need of such tawdry maneuvers. All she does is open the waterworks, and pow! Everyone likes her. She overcomes her serious violations of ji'e'toh and Tower Law in their eyes, whereas Rand had only committed the crime of being born with a Y-chromosome. Egwene's tears bridged a far greater mistrust, where Rand needed Compulsion. Clearly Egwene is by far the superior character.
