Verin's circle comes upon Graendal during the Cleansing, and try to shield her - they might have succeeded without Graendal's angreal.
Although Verin isn't one of the strongest Sisters, she can still travel so she isn't that weak. Kumira wasn't very strong, but Shalon, who rounded out the circle, seems to be quite powerful (Elza goes on about, essentially, how Shalon felt that her strength gave her the right to meld the flows and "she awas actually quite strong" - she is at least more powerful than Verin).
Together, even with Graendal already holding saidar, they might have succeeded if not for the gold ring - especially as Graendal wasn't aware of the circle until Verin struck.
