they were not symbolic of someone's affiliations, but rather it was the mechanism by which the DO kept an eye on his cronies. now if Taim is a DF and has been elevated to joint he forsaken, it is possible that he might have the wires, but I doubt that anyone else in the BT would.

Like AgentOrange said, we know from Asmodean that the wires shielded him from the taint. He says this to Rand and there is also a PoV where he thinks that channeling Saidin is disgusting now that he has been cut from the DO.

It is certainly very possible that the cords have other purposes too but I don't think we know of them for sure.

You could argue I suppose that the DO did not bother to shield the darkfriend Asha'man from the taint at all. There would be no wires for Rand to cut then. However that in turn leads to several problems. For example, why would any Asha'man follow the power that created the taint that is going to kill them. I would think they would be more likely to oppose and hate the being that is causing them to slowly go mad from the taint. Once the DO offered safety and protection from the taint on the other hand, it would be simple to imagine the less moral Asha'man jumping at the chance.

And with the protection come the wires that Rand can cut to expose the Asha'man as a darkfriend.
