"Did Verin lie" was never a huge debate. It did spawn an incredibly idiotic "lightfriends" debate, but it was never as huge as Taimandred and the related debates of who Demandred is and where he is if he isn't Mazrim Taim. Even though Taimandred has been debunked, the issue of Demandred lives on and has contributed to a LOT more discussion than "did Verin lie".

As for Moiraine, it was obvious she wasn't dead from the books. I don't think anyone seriously argued she was dead.

Given it was still ongoing and Taimandred wasn't "did Verin lie" strikes me as much bigger, especially in light of her influence on and knowledge of the main characters. She's spent a lot of time, in some cases decades, with most of the key players on the Light side and she can use Compulsion, so that's a much bigger deal to me than whether Jordan was lying when he said Taim isn't Demandred and that Demandred hasn't appeared as an "alt" (don't quote my wording on that last one because it is a paraphrase from memory.) Frankly, it seems like Jordan deliberately held out on us with Demandred just as he has with Asmo, so it's no surprise that continues. As more secrets are revealed and more mysteries resolved it will be harder and harder to preserve any for the final book, and I'd rather have a shocker then worth the name than the so called "GASP!" moment in KoD.

For the record, I've personally participated in a number of debates about whether Moiraine was alive despite all the foreshadowing and parallels with Gandalf et alia and they only only ceased with the publication of KoD. I never saw a clear consensus, which I attribute mostly to Jordans habit of turning well established tropes on their heads (which is necessary to some extent to prevent anyone with a copy of Mallory or Chretien from ruining the ending.)
