There are multiple signs that he has a further purpose - in Prophecy, in Egwene's Dreams and myth.

Fragment of the Prophecies from TPoD Chapter. 14:
"Into the heart he thrusts his sword, into the heart, to hold their hearts. Who draws it out shall follow after. What hand can grasp that fearful blade?"
Rand sent Jahar to retrieve Callandor. Does this mean that Jahar will follow in Rand's footsteps? The last line gives a sign that he will hold Callandor in some further use.
Egwene al'Vere also had a Dream involving him in ACoS Chapter 10: A dark young man held an object in his hand that shone so brightly she could not see what it was.
This points to Jahar Narishma once again. Jahar also wielded Callandor during the battle near Shadar Logoth while the Cleansing was going on; he was linked with Elza Penfell and Merise Haindehl, his Bondmate.
Even more intriguing is recalling Elza's actions during the Cleangsing and the events during TGS, Jahar Narishma 1) now knows the weave for balefire and 2) was in a Circle that destroyed a Forsaken. Thus he is in a position to oppose the Forsaken as Rand has before with balefire.
Also, to dip into mythological parallels, it is clear to me that some of the strongest characters are linked to the major ritualistic tools in mystical traditions. I'm speaking of the cup, the sword, the pentacles and the wand:
1) It seems to me that the cup was the Bowl of Winds, which seems linked to Elayne because she first created a link with the Windfinders back in TSR and this relationship enabled the first blow against the Dark One's touch on the weather to be successful. 2) The wand seems to be Vora's sa'angreal - it is as long as a woman's wrist and it seems to be Linked with Egwene...following in Siuan's footsteps, each time we have seen it used, it was in a Circle lead by the Amyrlin Seat, and she used this during the raid on the White Tower.
3) The pentacles are hard to place, but I would put them on Nynaeve, and her connection with Lan - the design of the signet ring he gave her as a gift; pentacles themselves can take many forms, but they are often connected with crowns. Lan's ring has a sword, a crown and a crane in flight on it. It is associated somewhat with the right to reign.
4) Finally, the sword is obviously Callandor. This is the one Sword that has been consistently referred to in prophecy for obvious reasons. What is most interesting about it, IMHO, is that a) Lews Therin did not use it in the first Seal's creation and b) Rand indicated he may not use it further. The only person aside from Rand to hold the Sword that is Not A Sword, therefore is Narishma. I believe he will take the role of the Guardian of the Dragon during Tarmon Gaidon and Rand's people (the Aiel) after the Last Battle has been won.
These four symbols taken together generally connote the right to rule; thus it seems fitting that the first three are in the hands of rulers of their respective factions with Nynaeve acting as the defacto Queen Consort of the Malkieri people, while Narishma's role may be closer to that of Sir Galahad (Galahad was one of the three knights who achieved the Holy Grail and was the illegitimate son of Lancelot and Elaine). We've heard before of the queer ways of the Arafellin and I believe they are connected to the Aiel and the Tinkers, but I don't have more information as to why besides a hunch.
