Well, forkroot is supposed to prevent someone from channeling

Egwene stated that Linking was one way to open herself to the Power, but she also mentioned when she joined the Circle that she was working with the amount of saidar she was used to - meaning that her own channeling capacity was limited by the forkroot, and she was relying on the amounts of saidar provided by the Circle for the most part.
There was no indication that linking would overcome that barrier. Nor using a Well, etc.
At the least, I think it could have used some better explanation than "oh, this works - and right when I need it, too!"

There were wards on the door to get in (which Gateways kinda invalidate).

I think that's only for the Amyrlin. IIRC, no one else ever calls initiates daughters.
