Well, that's a load of nonsense, sorry. fionwe1987 Send a noteboard - 13/11/2009 09:05:01 PM
Why should Rand be accepted as leader through Egwene's choice?

Where did I say this? I said she should accept him because he deserves to lead, not because she is forced to.
Why should he not wrest his leadership from all contenders by the power of his force.

What power? The Choedan Kal? If he does so, no one will trust him, and he can trust no one. Tam or Nynaeve would beat him down and take the Choedan Kal away. He cannot wander about continuously drawing from it. The moment he uses it to force people to his will, uses it to perform atrocities, anyone will try and stop him, and rightly so.
Destroying the Choedan Kal was ridiculous. He could have sealed Tarwin's Gap through volcanic lava.

And be tempted to do other things too. And volcanic lava sprouts to cover up a pass. Can you think of the possible negative effects this can have on the plate tectonics of the Borderlands? Do we really need violent earthquakes to add to the fun of the battles there?

He could have shielded ALL Aes Sedai, and made them swear allegiance to him one by one. Including Egwene.

Yeah, like Egwene, Siuan and the like won't die rather than be forced.
Even if he did manage to make them swear, the Aes Sedai will work against him, and this time they'd be right.
Why does he have the right to force them into anything? Because prophesy says he's critical for the LB? Why would any Aes Sedai favor being the slave of a monster over annihilation for herself and the world? Better that than to be forced to perform atrocities, no?
I can't believe that someone from these times cannot see the immense negative effects tyranny and rule by fear have on a leadership.
He could have crushed the Seanchan.

And lost a people trying to do what they think is right. He'd lost a people who can provide stability in these times of chaos. A people who can provide a massive force for the Last Battle.
Then he could have asaulted Shayol Ghul with a united, ordered force behind him, not because the world chooses to follow him, but because if they don't, the Dark One wins. It is the rational, logical course to follow.

Two problems here. First, you're assuming that his current armies are enough to assault Shayol Ghul. There is absolutely no evidence for that.
Second, most of his armies will melt away the moment he turns into the monster you want him to be. Sure, some will stay out of fear, but the same fear will make others lose rationality and logic.
How long before someone thinks Rand has turned to the DO and tries to kill him? How long before his close allies, disgusted by his callousness and coldness, decide to sit out and watch him fight the Dark One alone?
You say the Prophesies should be the justification for Rand's tyranny? If the Prophesies are so inviolate as to allow that, then people can bail out on Rand and he will still win in SG. Why would they follow him, then? What is their motivation to be? Supplant one monster with another? Trust that the man who forced them into fealty will see sense and give them freedom? What bullshit!
Anyway, shattering the Choedan Kal was unnecessary. He did not have to erase Ebou Dar with it. He could just have destroyed the Seanchan fleet with it. Or turned the Seanchan continent into the Randland version of Atlantis.

You prove yet again exactly why Rand was right to destroy the CK. Submerge the largest continent in the world? How many threads are being removed from the Pattern here? And what of the aftershocks? You do not raise the sea level to cover up Seanchan and then expect nothing to happen to the rest of the world.

Worse... why is the Dragon better than the DO here? He has killed millions in one stroke so he could remove opposition. How is this different from the DO attempting to fix summer so there would be mass starvation?

Contrary to your assumption, Rand is not supposed to just defeat the DO. That is but one part of the equation. Enough of humanity needs to be preserved so that it can carry on, after.
Having a feelgood scene may be nice and fuzzy, but it wasn't really necessary for victory.

Of course it was. In what strange world is victory achieved when the Hero destroys creation? Do you think Rand should have done that?

I loved Dark Rand. I agree, I wish he was around longer. Should've come out earlier in the series. - 13/11/2009 03:23:59 PM 495 Views

You're right. But I'm very angry with the writers for portraying Egwene in such a positive way. - 13/11/2009 07:18:10 PM 451 Views
