She made all of Rand's subsequent chapter's suspensful, IMO

It made me worried every time he touched the CK, that he was going to balefire something else.
If he hadn't done that to Graendal, then I wouldn't have had a care.
If he'd killed her one on one, I wouldn't have been worried in the least that he would balefire the Seanchan or actually rain down lightning on Far Madding or felt for him so much on Dragonmount. I obviously knew he wasn't going to destroy the world, but there was still tension that wouldn't have been there if he'd killed Graendal in a solo match.
It wasn't until the moment that he killed Graendal that I really believed he was capable of killing innocent people to get what he wanted. (I'm not necessarily saying what he did at her palace was wrong, but if he had done what he planned in Far Madding and later Ebou Dar, that would have been wrong).
So, that was the point to Graendal
(she also caused a lot of chaos to an entire country. She was more effective in that way than any other Forsaken. It just happened in a country that didn't have any characters we cared about, so it doesn't seem like a big deal)

Sorry, haven't read any Harry Potter books, so I have no clue what you're referring to.

The issue is that it is easier to make a gateway than to block one - individually.
