...Wow, this post went pretty far afield. I hope you understand what I'm saying. tGS was a bit more self-referential than other WoT books, but not in a bad, or a meta way. Just in a "We have 13 books of plot here, let's have some of it pay off, eh?" kind of way.
Yeah, it was. But I really doubt that much of that had to do with Sanderson. It may have been a subconscious move on Sanderson's part, he's mentioned in his Mistborn annotations that he enjoys reflection by characters and flashback moments.
But I think RJ wanted us to know the end was near. We're not building to something anymore, we're there, or very close to it.
I get what you're saying now, but I still don't think anything was simply a fan-service, other than the fact that epic fantasy writing as a whole is something of a fan service .
