You're saying everything must be either literal or metaphoric?

That's absolutely not the case in the Wheel of Time series. The prophecies mention the Eye of the World, they mention Shaidar Haran, they mention the Seals, they mention the Crown of Swords. It's very often that the Karaethon Cycle refers to literal objects. It also refers to events metaphorically as well. People aren't "picking and choosing" which they prefer--they're attempting to decipher to what exactly the Prophecies refer.
Given that Rand has somehow acquired a sword that's familiar to him, but not in this life, and that the prophecies mention the sword of justice, and that Paendrag's sword was called Justice, I think this interpretation fits rather nicely.

Maybe I'm stupid, but why would Hawkwing have been using Lews Therin's sword?

Wouldn't Lews Therin's sword be buried under Dragonmount? And didn't Rand say it was his own memory?

I would bet he tossed it in disgust after the war of power was over. *NM*
