...it turns out that there is nothing elite about them - they are simply there because they are the most venal and corruptible. The Dark One promoted them because they are so selfish that they are easily controlled! Not for superior channeling or skill or intelligence or accomplishments, but because they were incredibly selfish jerks who happened to be born with natural power.
I've been sure of this since the begining. Seeing how lame Ishamael was really served to devalue the Forsaken in my estimation. It is clear that the Dark One is playing them all, and the fact that the "most powerful" were among the first to falter or die through their personal quirks and weaknesses.
"Paired opposites define your longings, and those longings imprison you." - the Forsaken are fictional counterparts to Herbert's old saying.
At this point, I'm just waiting for Ishamael/Moridin to become Shaidar Haran's pleasure slave.
I really wish this wasn't the case, although I disagree with you about Ishamael. He got shit done consistently throughout the ages due him to being spun out for 40 years at a time. The main reason he was rather ineffective in the beginning I think was because he was more insane than not due to overuse of the TP. He pretty much destroyed civilization single-handedly TWICE. That's a pretty good track record compared to the rest of the Forsaken.

There's also Fain, Slayer, and a bunch of non-DF's who nevertheless do heaps of evil.

I wonder when Sheriam joined the Blacks, and how much she grew up after.
