...it turns out that there is nothing elite about them - they are simply there because they are the most venal and corruptible. The Dark One promoted them because they are so selfish that they are easily controlled! Not for superior channeling or skill or intelligence or accomplishments, but because they were incredibly selfish jerks who happened to be born with natural power.
I've been sure of this since the begining. Seeing how lame Ishamael was really served to devalue the Forsaken in my estimation. It is clear that the Dark One is playing them all, and the fact that the "most powerful" were among the first to falter or die through their personal quirks and weaknesses.

At this point, I'm just waiting for Ishamael/Moridin to become Shaidar Haran's pleasure slave.
