I'm bad at writing these, but I'll try
First of all, I hardly noticed the writing difference.
First of all, I hardly noticed the writing difference.
was the use of:
1. "Homicide"
2. "Solder"
3. Mat saying "the flaming True Source".
There were a few others but nothing so egregious.
1. Why not say Murder? This just seemed very out of place.
2. Solder?!?!? This just has to be a mistake. I mean I guess it comes from some word meaning to join, or make solid, but that word just does not fit in the books.
3. Mat has always said "the one power". The True source indicates a familiarity with it that I do not believe Mat would ever use, despite his obvious and continual surrounding with those who tap into said power, he wants nothing to do with it.
I 'll have to reference exactly what he is talking about to comment any further.
A minor note but I was mostly confused how he handled Talmanes. I don't think Mat himself was written much differently, besides the use of homicide and what I've said above. But I think how Mat interacts with those around him is what makes Mat the character that he is, and if those people fundamentally change then of course Mat will as well.
For comparison, go read the scene when Mat first speaks to Betse Silve... in the inn right before they fake march to war in Tear at a table with himself, Daerid, Talmanes, and Nalsean ( I think). (forgive me, I'm paraphrasing from memory at work) and she begins talking "faster than he can run" and both Daerid and Nalsean begin laughing about something made up “the frog on thin ice”, and “even Talmanes began chuckling”.
To me someone who has been portrayed as Talmanes has been, does not evolve to “laughing on the inside” when that is exactly something RJ would have alluded to earlier. I do realize he is a relatively minor character, it was just strange to me.

I'm hoping that chapters 4-6 involve shadowspawn on the rampage.
