As if Ishy could have just killed Rand and his two ta'veren pals in tEotW and it would be over, just like that. If that were the case, then I'd be really disappointed in the Dark One's ability to judge talent. He should have made Demandred Nae'blis/General of the Shadow. Rand and Co. wouldn't have lasted half a book if it were that easy, though.

I think it's been suggested before that, if Rand dies, the Pattern will just spit out others to take his place. That way, the only way the Shadow can hope to win is if they manipulate the Dragon into hurting his own side. That could explain the motivation to Turn him. Then again, couldn't they just have sent 13 AS and 13 Myrrdraal to the 2rivers (or a number of other places Rand travels to)?

Clearly, Moridin has a plan that requires Rand to survive till "the final day."

The only way the Light can win is if the Dragon survives. Therefore they need to kill him. Even if the Pattern could spit out a new Dragon, it would take at least 20 years for that man to gain the ability to channel, by which time the Shadow would have overrun the world and freed the Dark One. There is no indication in the series that the death of the Dragon Reborn would be anything other than catastrophic for the fate of the world.

Moridin's plan is transparent - it always has been.
