Dueling Theory II: Taim is Be'lal. Joel Send a noteboard - 07/10/2009 03:37:59 PM
I feel a lot better about this one; I wish there was some way to reconcile it with the other, but as of TFoH we haven't seen any Forsaken resurrected and have no reason to think one will be, certainly not if balefired.

And, yes, Be'lal WAS balefired; I know that. However, we also know Moiraine says she can only remove a few seconds with balefire, and that the Dark One can capture souls for transmigration if he's watching when they're killed. Thus all that's necessary for Be'lal to be so treated if that he know to be watching; since Be'lals plan was to let the Dragon Reborn seize Callandor AND THEN TAKE IT FROM HIM that's not an unreasonable expectation. Afterward the Dark One just pops Be'lal into a captured Taim, to take advantage of his existing followers or eliminate a potential asset to Rand. That could well explain the REAL reason Taims escape was so successful.

Balefire's really the greatest challenge; from there the rest reads like "Taimandred" with the KoD Epilogue thrown in for good measure. The "so called Aiel. " The fact he's been channeling for years but shows no sign of Taint. His adoption of the Forsakens red and black livery, and the fist-gripping-lightning sigil of Be'lal and Sammael. His knowledge of the Dark Ones "Let the Lord of Chaos rule" order.

There is ONE other thing I find interesting: Every single Forsaken killed prior to Rahvin is known to have been resurrected EXCEPT Be'lal. Some might attribute this to balefire, yet when the Dark One states he "cannot step outside of time" it's a comment ONLY directed at Rahvin "dead in his pride. " Obviously Rahvin is as much "toast" as Sammael; Rand can erase a great deal more than a few seconds with balefire, especially wielding an angreal, and we know from Mat and Aviendhas resurrection that he did when he killed Rahvin. With Be'lal, however, this seems far less certain.

I know it's a long shot, but it seems plausible and appealing.
