Can't remember, do we actually know, how stilling/gentling works? Does every AS and AM know the weave? Do you need several channelers to do it? Or is it done with a ter'angreal? Maybe stilling and gentling isn't that easy to perform.

Egwene stilled Amico by accident when trying to shield her in T'A'R in tDR. Nynaeve knows how she did it, because she tried to use the same weave on Moghedian in tSR, but Moghedian's defense weakened it to an ordinary shield. Rand did it to the three sisters who were holding his shield when he broke free at Dumai's Wells, though it is unknown if he remembers what he did or how he did it. He does not always remember things he does instinctively (rain at Alcair Dal; studies the first time he ties off a weave to be sure he can do it again...) but sometimes he does, so it is impossible to say if he can (or would) use it again or in a non-reactive manner (he turned their shield against them in some way - it was described as crushing the soft points where they were holding the shield, IIRC - so we don't know if he could simply still a woman who was not attempting to shield him and presenting that soft point to hit). Later the Asha'man who reports to Rand in Illian (Torval, I think) says that the Asha'man don't know how to gentle men saying that the poison they give those who go mad is "Kinder than gentling, even if we knew how..." But they would know what Rand did to the women at Dumai's Wells, and could ask him.

I think Egwene took longer because it was the first time. *NM* - 04/10/2009 07:20:26 PM 303 Views
