Given the discoveries of Nynaeve and Flinn becomming general knowledge among those channelers who can spare a minute from their squabbles over rank and privileges to fight the Shadow, should it not become the standard procedure, upon taking Shadow-sworn captives, as happened to more than one group in the last book, to still (or gentle if appropriate) them immediately?
Cons:
- might be against some petty White Tower jurisdictional authority set down in stone thousands of years ago, and the completely differing circumstances of the current time from whatever problem the Tower originally sought to eliminate will, of course, not prevent the Hall from being complete tools and harassing any pragmatists in honor of their sacrosanct ossified procedures.
Pros:
- reversible if it turns out they are wrong. This knowledge is held by at least one sister or more among every organized group of channelers. Elayne was present the first time it was ever done, Pevara and the Reds know about Flinn and the Tower in general should be aware from Leane, and of course the rebels know. Rand has both Healers in his entourage, so he has no excuses, and the Black Tower, of course, has to be aware from Logain's prominence. With that in mind, no one should fear dishing out permanent mutilation of this nature to captured Darkfriends, since it is not permanent any more. Additionally, this offers a compromise to the main "con" because you can Heal them again to give the Hall of the Tower its figurative pound of flesh and allow them to be formally stilled and executed according to Tower law.
- THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO CHANNEL. How is this anything but good? Let Semirhage boast and threaten when she can't even touch the Source. Elayne won't have to rotate the unreliable Kin to keep the Black sisters sheilded. And what about the difficulties interrogating the Black Ajah? Still them and their Oath is nullified. Darkfriends being what they are, once their Oaths are removed, getting them to talk should present no problem, especially with the services of such individuals as Master Lounalt.
So what does everyone think? Of course, killing them like rabid animals is the best solution, but for most Darkfriends, the issue of proving guilt in a trial is an important principle that should be upheld (though the notion that only Aes Sedai may try someone for such offenses is ludicrous; the only reason I can see for Rand to hand over Semirhage to the Tower is to avoid sentencing her to death himself - the Dragon Reborn has every bit as much jurisdiction over the Forsaken as the Tower, especially when you consider Semirhage is not and never has been associated with the Tower in any way). But can anyone see any better reasons for or against such a policy?
