Re: Egwene's Evil Vol XI: The Gathering Storm, pt 1 Cannoli Send a noteboard - 21/04/2015 07:56:41 PM

When you consider that the central protagonist of the series is a male channeler it makes sense that the Red Ajah would become antagonists, as indeed they were in the early books. But Jordan fell into the same trap with them that he did later with Egwene: treating opposition as wickedness. The hero is doing the Right Thing, therefore anyone who opposes them must be Bad and Wrong. And so where all other Ajahs were allowed their good and bad members, Reds were almost to a woman portrayed as cruel, arrogant, insular, suspicious and virulently misandric even by WoT standards. When we did eventually start to see 'good' Reds like Tarna and Pevara, Jordan made a point of telling us they were exceptions to the rule. The same thing happened with Elaida. Early Elaida was harsh and unpleasant, but she wasn't evil and seemed a reasonably competent Amyrlin. But by the time of Egwene's capture she had devolved into a frothing, paranoid megalomaniac. It's a pity. It would have been a much more interesting story if she hadn't, or if Siuan had remained Amrylin and Egwene had had to oppose a woman already established as 'one of the good guys'.

That goes on all too much. I hated that Taim turned out to be a Darkfriend, and I didn't like that we never got to see where Logain was going under the real author, as opposed to the ghostwriter who dropped Logain's arc to make room for his personal Mary Sue. If it hadn't been for Min's viewing needing fulfillment, I wonder if he would have even got as much screen time in aMoL as he did. I wanted more of a thing with good guys who were jerks and in opposition...but still good, and I also would have liked to see more obstructive characters doing so out of honest disagreements in policy, rather than pettiness or greed or whatever. One of the things I notice is that despite all the relatively sympathetic people who, at the outset of the books, occupy positions to which the protagonists will eventually rise, they are removed by third parties, allowing the good guys to keep their hands relatively clean in their ascent. Siuan, Morgase, Mattin Stepaneos, and Pedron Niall all had to get out of the way of Egwene, Elayne, Rand & Galad, and the bad guys obliged. It might have been really neat to see Elayne having to duplicate the actions of Ishara, namely deposing and locking up her mother for the greater good. Galad's ascent didn't come at the expense of a great general, who was on the short list of people actively preparing on their own for Tarmon Gaidon, but happened to be locked into a mentality and status quo that was incompatible with what needed to be done; instead, he got to cut his way through an incompetent usurper, who also happens to be a rapist. I would have liked to see Rand have to deal with at least one monarch we didn't meet while she was hitting on him. He could have decided to crown himself as king of Tear to put himself on an even footing with the liberated Mattin Stepaneos in aCoS or tPoD, as part of his hubris arc, and then give it up to Darlin after his Dragonmount apotheosis.

In short, what I am saying is that I wish there had been a little less uniformity and conviviality on the side of the Light.
