That sulfur smell means Darkhounds were in the area. Perrin has smelled sulfur multiple times in the series and it has always meant there are Darkhounds in the vicinity.


The same smell and wind originated on Dragonmount, and carried across the continent, visiting various locales, such as the rebel Aes Sedai camp. Sulfurous gas is common from a volcano, and increase as the seismic activity increases - ie, gets closer to eruption.
