A lot of manufacturing (though no mention of textiles), and was clearly an entrepot (cargos arrive from all over, are broken up and repackaged and then sent off to customers/consumers in different directions--sort of like Troy/Byzantium and/or London, Amsterdam, Genoa, Venice, maybe Alexandria or the Caribbean Island of St Eustice until the 1780s. Seems to me RJ's descriptions are meant to evoke a lot of these places, as are his descriptions of other cities, especially in the South.
