Plus RJ's notes said he played up minor prophecies on purpose *NM* Dark Knight Send a noteboard - 01/02/2013 02:53:43 PM
I'm not sure if anyone else discussed this yet, but I wanted to discuss this major red herring by RJ.

"Into the heart he thrusts his sword,

into the heart, to hold their hearts.

Who draws it out shall follow after,

What hand can grasp that fearful blade?"

I always thought that this passage referred to Narisha pulling Callandor out of the stone. I thought Narisha would have a big role to play due to this passage. I was wrong.

I think it clearly refers to Moridin. The interested thing is that this kind of forshadows the bodyswap. Moridin takes Callandor from Rand by injuring his own hand. Interestingly, Rand eventually becomes Moridin completing the "shall follow after" part of this passage. The whole "who draws it out" doesn't necessarily have to refer to the Stone like we always assumed.

Interesting how RJ messed around with so many years before the end.

That has been suggested a lot since AMOL, but I've seen no one yet who convincingly explained how the first two lines refer to Moridin and not to the abundantly obvious (underlined by Moiraine in TSR) event where Rand decided to drive Callandor into the floor of the Heart of the Stone, to hold the loyalty of the High Lords, showing them not to stray because he'd be back for Callandor one day.

Moridin never drew Callandor, he picked it up as Rand let it fall on purpose. The one to draw Callandor out of the Heart was Narishma, and he did follow after Rand's steps to unmake the ward.

He was dragonsworn, Asha'man, a follower of Rand beside.

People simply made way too much of the "shall follow after" line, seing some glorious future for Narishma in it, which was probably RJ's intent as he liked to distract us with stuff like this and watch us make a big deal of lines that were mundane. The "classic" will remain Min's ominous viewing about Alivia that turned out to be extremely mundane, one of those self-fulfilling prophecy since Rand thought of giving the task to Alivia because Min had told him "she'll help you die".

What that prophecy said is simple: Rand shall leave Callandor behind to hold the hearts of the High Lords, and he shall not be the one to draw Callandor from the Heart, he had to send one of his followers to draw it out. We even know why. Rand would likely have died, not paying enough attention to his own ward. Narishma survived, because he only had Rand's verbal instruction to follow after and undo the ward, and not too trusting or confident, he was hesitant and cautious, and thus noticed the trap a Forsaken added to the ward.

Rand's ward was also nasty, so only him or one who followed his instructions could draw it out.

It also gave us a big clue that Callandor was dangerous, foreshadowing for the big reveal it was flawed.
