I went to the World's Fair in 1982 with my family - again, small world! Larry Send a noteboard - 27/01/2013 03:08:27 AM

Yeah, I bet that would be a culture shock! I've never been farther west than Kansas City (went there for three days with my youngest brother back in May), but the idea of whole swathes of land with so few neighbors around would be jarring to me and I grew up in an area that used to be semi-rural (35 miles west of Nashville, TN) until the past 20 years. Sounds like you've made some interesting changes in your personal life and that you're content with those, so congrats! :D I'm mostly the same, moving from residential treatment teaching job every so often because a place closes (I like to think not because of me, but despite me :P), so I may be heading back to grad school part-time this summer to work on a second Master's degree, this time in teaching ESL. Had a couple of short story translations published in the past 18 months, one in a big anthology published here by Tor (The Weird, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer, both of whom I've come to consider to be good friends of mine), so if you ever wanted to critique the writer/translator's writing style in revenge for my critiques over the years, there's the perfect opportunity! :P

Take care, John, and hope to see you around at least occasionally :D

To Tennessee that is. We were visiting family in Florence AL, and the World's Fair was in Knoxville. So we got up early and made a looong day trip out of it. (Disappointing, actually) That was 1983, so you were probably just a tyke back then. But I do remember the rolling hills of grass, and huge firework outlets. Leaving Al and GA., you drive right out of what seems all kudzu vine covered forest, and TN was almost barren in contrast. (At least that's the way I recall it.) I'm sure the population has surged since, but it was fairly sparse back then. That's as far east as I've gone, but it sure helped develop an appreciation for this country of ours. We have some of the most beautiful places in the world, and everyone should make the time to see some of them.

I was about to turn 8 when we went, so I was a child, but old enough to remember some of the exhibits (I was fascinated by the Arabic calligraphy shown as part of the Saudi exhibit, and I like the Korean one). East Tennessee is very different to me than Middle TN (at least in terms of urban/suburban areas). The population for the state is now about 6.2 million, if I recall, so yeah, about 33% increase over 30 years. I like the NC side of the mountains more than the East TN side, but I agree that there's is a lot of beautiful places in this world (Asheville, NC being my favorite place to visit). Maybe I'll get a chance to head back out there this summer or next, depending on time/job/school (I do have to take some grad coursework to renew my teacher's license this summer).
