Yeah, I bet that would be a culture shock! I've never been farther west than Kansas City (went there for three days with my youngest brother back in May), but the idea of whole swathes of land with so few neighbors around would be jarring to me and I grew up in an area that used to be semi-rural (35 miles west of Nashville, TN) until the past 20 years. Sounds like you've made some interesting changes in your personal life and that you're content with those, so congrats!

Take care, John, and hope to see you around at least occasionally

To Tennessee that is. We were visiting family in Florence AL, and the World's Fair was in Knoxville. So we got up early and made a looong day trip out of it. (Disappointing, actually) That was 1983, so you were probably just a tyke back then. But I do remember the rolling hills of grass, and huge firework outlets. Leaving Al and GA., you drive right out of what seems all kudzu vine covered forest, and TN was almost barren in contrast. (At least that's the way I recall it.) I'm sure the population has surged since, but it was fairly sparse back then. That's as far east as I've gone, but it sure helped develop an appreciation for this country of ours. We have some of the most beautiful places in the world, and everyone should make the time to see some of them.
