He seems a. fine with them, and b. rather too free of them, IMO. I can't really see the point of wanting to be with any of them, though they range from second favorite to second least favorite of the female characters, but if that's what floats Rand's boat, he should act like it, and follow up on his end(s) of the deal. Aside from deciding which one of them he sleeps with at any given time, I really don't see what you consider so arduous or oppressive in their approach to the relationship (aside from insisting on it in the first place, but that's not really going against his will, that's blowing off bullshit excuses he makes to weasel out of paying for the cow after the fact).
Meh, I just find the whole thing ridiculous. I don’t blame Rand at all for being “too free” of them. I don’t really blame him for any of it. The only one of the three he ever really made a move on without them provoking it first is Aviendha and, in his own overly noble way, he attempted to make things right afterward only to have her call him a moron and basically act like she would rather see him dead than have to speak to him. The man was right in the middle of horny boy stage and he had not one but three women jerking him around. He never stood a chance. They got the upper hand right off the bat then bonded him to boot just to make it clear where his “place” was. Yeah, he got laid, by three different women, no less, but the man is hot as hell and awesome – he could get a piece of ass anywhere, so there’s no need for him to be little more than a vibrator that’ll be shared between two women who are two heartbeats away from having a lesbian love affair with each other and a third wheel that just doesn’t work with the other two.
While I can see pre-epiphany Rand being “fine” with the situation (it reminded me a great deal of poor hormone-enraged Anakin with the “don’t look at me like that even though my boobs are popping out of my dress and I’m wearing a leash” Padmé), I can’t see a man with a lifetime of experience being okay with his “place” (i.e., piss off until one of us gets horny, then that one will come see you, bang your brains out and disappear and, by the way, we aren’t going to let you see your children either). Women are born knowing how to jerk guys around using sex – Aviendha is probably the least guilty of this of his three women, but she still should’ve known enough to understand what she was doing – and Rand was too inexperienced to have a chance. Now, it should be different, but it’s not…
Their non-reaction was because they knew he was still alive. At various times in the series they've all evinced strong emotional reactions to the mere notion of him dying.
ROTFLMAO! Strong emotional reactions? Elayne reacted more emotionally to indigestion than she did the thought that Rand was destined to die. “That bloody man! I hate him! I should kill him for knocking me up and giving me this horrible indigestion and morning sickness! That horrible bastard! Arggh! I hate goat’s milk!!” as opposed to, “Hmm. Rand’s gonna die. Too bad. Oh well, I have a country to run. And that stupid bastard thought he could give it to me. He’s a moron and too stupid to breathe! How dare he! Birgitte, I don’t want goat’s milk, damn you!”
Aviendha wasn’t much better. “Oh, Elayne is so awesome and hot. I wish I could be like her. I feel bad for banging Rand when he belonged to her. Hmm, Rand will wake from the dream soon. I wonder what Elayne is doing now…”
Min is the only one of the three who showed emotion about Rand at all, even if she was an idiot and happily betrayed his confidence every chance she got.
If he had died for real, they'd have been showing it for sure, even if some of them might have restrained themselves in public.
Neither Elayne nor Aviendha would’ve shown a damned bit of emotion about him. Hell, Elayne lost Birgitte and showed nothing. Granted, she isn’t heartless, like Egwene, but she is ice on the outside and likely always will be. Aviendha was trained to be ice and looks at death differently anyway, so people dying really doesn’t affect her.
We see nothing of their private reactions, just the public consumption. My long-standing contention on emotional behavior (in real life as well) is that feelings are like bowel movements. Just because everybody has them, is no excuse for publicly expressing them. Also, some of them who are not Min were fairly busy with the whole "running the world" gig.
Uh huh. And pregnant Elayne was an emotional rollercoaster – in front of people, no less - about everything from not getting to drink wine to people trying to tell her she shouldn’t be running into a burning building full of explosives while she’s pregnant. The woman has been little but emotion since getting pregnant, but the only emotion she’s ever managed to muster for Rand (other than horniness) is anger. And, at Rand’s “funeral”, even the men there comment on what cold-hearted bitches all three of them are. If they truly wanted to help Rand make the world believe he’s dead (without making themselves look like psychos in the process), then at least a bowed head with a forlorn expression would be necessary.
There was a WAR on, like five seconds ago. They've lost whole fucktons of loved ones, but their love interests are still alive, and that thing where one of them thought her babies were going to be cut out of her stomach and offered up to the Dark One didn't happen. In a situation like that, I think you're just sitting back relieved about who DIDN'T die, rather than weeping for that one really crummy friend who spent most of her time asserting that they couldn't be real friends anyway. Also, when you're crippled, that might be a bit more weighing on the brain than the two-faced liar who forced you to do your punishment runs really slowly before making your love life a living hell and then running off to the White Tower, and only having one other significant conversation where she tried to pry into your personal and professional secrets.
Seriously, I can't believe that you, of all people, are mad about people's failure to mourn Egwene.
Seriously, I can't believe that you, of all people, are mad about people's failure to mourn Egwene.
Oh, that isn’t what makes me angry at all. In fact, it annoyed me that Nynaeve shed a tear over that bitch given how much Egwene has crapped on her since leaving Emond’s Field. My problem is, as stated above, with the fact that Rand’s three women couldn’t manage an emotion. As I said, if the three stooges truly wanted to help Rand make the world believe he’s dead, then at least a bowed head with a forlorn expression would be necessary – if they can’t manage it for Rand because they know he lives, then they should at least think about the other people they claimed to care for. Instead, they stand around like they’re bored and raise suspicion about Rand dying.
Hell, Elayne lost her Warder. We KNOW that will have effects, regardless of the feelings of the individual involved, but we don't see her wracked with the grief that comes of breaking an even closer than normal bond.
I found that odd, really, but I guess it could be the nature of bonding a female instead of a male. Who the hell knows. It’s either that or the woman really is made of ice now.
2' /> You know, all other reasons aside, you are among my favorite wotmaniacs because you make me feel SOOOO so so sane.
That’s because you’re deluded. No one would ever accuse you of being sane, Cannoli.
Come on! Egwene is DEAD! She died arguably ignominiously! Her death's big purpose was not trading her life for Rand's or some other way I was afraid if she did die (actually I never seriously considered that she might die), but rather, her death was the one to put the whole issue of death in perspective for him! It took Egwene's death to remind Rand that losing loved ones is not all that big of a deal! Even at the very end, the writers gave us this last gift of Egwene's contributions undermining her character. We should be REJOICING, not nitpicking that in the haste to wrap up 14 books over three different decades, the authors never took time to show people grieving over her! We should be taking delight in the fact that even in death, her megalomania and/or predilection for unearned honors manifests, as Egwene has to have a bigger, fancier funeral than Rand!
Her megalomania was going strong at the end…naming the weave the Flame of Tar Valon. Really? My God, the ego on that woman. Have you seen people claiming that she had more of a bond to the land than Rand? I thought I’d puke reading that. They’re delusional.
Though I’m thrilled that wench is finally dead, the way it went down annoyed me. I found it ridiculous that she got through the entire ordeal without a scratch on her. And Taim, with that sa’angreal should’ve easily slaughtered her. I did find it amusing that her “sacrifice” and decision to die came not because of Gawyn’s death and the broken bond, but because she realized she would be burned out when she released saidar. There was no way she could handle that, and not being the Amyrlin (and no longer being able to boss everyone around), so she drew in more power and died so the AS would talk about how great she was from now on.
So, is anyone else thinking that ending was a bit of a dick move....
