How the heck does Lan wack Demandred? Is he blocked from saidin making it a "fair" fight?

Mat sends one of Elayne's copy medallions to Galad, asking him to kill Sharan channelers. Galad comes across a dying Gawyn, who was defeated by Demandred in a swordfight (Gawyn was wearing the Bloodknife rings). He faces Demandred, and wounds him, but is finally seriously injured. He's taken to Mayene to the hospital, and from there Berelain takes it to give it to Mat. She gives it to Lan to pass it to Mat, but Lan puts it on and faces Demandred.


Kinda disappointing that Demandred is too stupid to realise how easily the medallion would be bypassed by attacking Lan indirectly (destroy the ground, summon huge amounts of fire around Lan, throw things at him at supersonic speeds, etc). This is twice as true considering that the copies were said to be inferior to the original.

Was there something to explain this (such as the fight happening in such close quarters that Demandred could not indirectly strike using the environment), or did Demandred just come off as a fool?

Demandred realizes it in minutes. But deep in the void, Lan can tell where the rocks Demandred is hurling are coming from because he can pay attention to where Demandred's eyes flicker to, briefly. So Lan is able to sidestep things Demandred throws his way.

Of course, there's a bigger reason why Demandred doesn't simply rip the ground below him.
