It matters. fionwe1987 Send a noteboard - 20/11/2012 05:22:40 PM

Technically, you are riht. In practice, though, it doesn't matter all that much.

It matters a lot.
As you say, we don't know where the distribution is truncated,

But we do know where it is truncated. It is truncated at 0 and at Rand's/Lanfear's strength, There's no doubts about this.
but let's assume for the sake of argument that it stops abruptly at 5 standard deviations below the mean (which is the same as changing the lower integration limit from -Infinity to -5).

No can do. We can't make any assumptions on SD. However, we do have facts about the upper and lower limits of OP strength. That's what we need to base things on.
This lifts Daigan to a whooping 0.318639 standard deviations below the mean. Even setting the cutoff at 3 standard deviations only lifts her to 0.315081. There just aren't enough people that far out to change the numbers a whole lot.

It makes all the difference when you realize that below 0 is just plain impossible. Sure, the additional area under the curve is not that huge, but it makes a difference. Either way, with the curve being truncated, the conclusion that if Daigian is strength 25, everyone in the world would be less than 1 SD from the mean is perfectly acceptable.
