Specifically I think Rand is going to have to sacrifice himself with a certainty that he WILL die. I have no clue how that may work, but I can't shake the feeling that Rand will have to have some sort of true death of a voluntary nature (Christ-like).
I agree, but it's what I propose....
Rand will choose to die. It's Nynaeve who won't know. Nynaeve will plan to heal Rand the minute his wounds pierce and his link to Moridin is cut. Rand knows he must die, he will arrange it with Alivia.
Here's an example of the sequence I have in mind:
Rand-Moiraine-Nynaeve at the Pit. The DO will let Nynaeve remove the residues of the sealing because it serves His purpose... Shaidar Haran and Moridin will show themselves.
When Nynaeve's done He will strike. Callandor will contain the counterstrike, when we understand how san'angreal and angreal really work are how they're made we'll understand why. We will know when Cadsuane bring a disappointing report about it. Rand now knows how san'angreal work, the principles behind it - and something in Cadsuane's report will tip him... he will puzzle out why Callandor magnifies the taint and what it implies... Don't ask me how it works, I haven't the slightest idea, the idea it might contain the counterstrike came to me from the viewing where there appears to be a black sword.
This is when Rand dies, from his wounds opening. His soul is linked to Moridin's. That it might end up first in Moridin's body is just an idea. I've speculated that it might be what Slayer was the template for: a merge between a dead Hero-soul (Luc's) and someone alive bonded to the DO (Isam).
I believe the Dragon soul has the power to rip the Bore open, if the DO or Moridin truly controlled it.
The key to freeing Rand's soul, ie: sending him to the Afterworld, would be to kill Moridin, which is what Alivia will be instructed to do. Rand will fall dying (and soulless), Shaidar Haran will seize Callandor. Nynaeve will precipate herself to heal Rand, Alivia holding the ter'angreal which hides from Shai'tan will step out of the Shadow and kill Moridin. Rand's three girls will take his body away (the three in a boat scene).
The rest will occur in the Afterworld (for Rand, it's TAR. Shaidar Haran will follow.. he might... dissolve.. into something more threatening to represent Shai'tan, or remain its physical form). Rand will hold Shai'tan's attention, while in the real world Nynaeve removes Shai'tan's "grip" on the Bore that still prevents the Wheel from closing it, like she does with a brain (it will be more like Rand's brain than Naeff's, I'm afraid). Shai'tan will try to seize Rand, until as Nynaeve finishes he will turn his attention to the Bore and try to regain his grip there, as it begins to close...
That's when Egwene, Perrin, the whole of the wolves will come into play to help the Wheel revert the Pattern to what it should be: a weakness in the Pattern that's normal and part of the system (, not a Bore allowing Shai'tan to exercise his will in the Pattern. They will fight with Shai'tan's Will, wishing the Bore close. As they near finishing this, Shai'tan will understand He's doomed for this cycle and he will rush to seize Rand's soul, and will grab him. This is when Mat needs to sound the Horn. I believe the real interpretation of the verse from the legends that the Aes Sedai of the AOL etched on it is: "Death, aka the Lord of the Grave himself, is no bar to my call". The Horn will retrieve Rand's soul and bring him and the Heroes in the real world.
This is when someone (Nynaeve?) may or may not manage to keep Rand in the real world for good. That will earn her the false reputation for having "healed death".
It would have the advantage of leaving us with two Rands: one dead body, one brought to life from TAR. Dead, yet alive.
It's far from perfect, and no doubt many of the details (and possibly more!) is quite wrong. One flaw is that I can't find a more important purpose for Moiraine (unless she dies with Rand and has a role in death...), and surely she has one.
It also does not account for how the Guardians and Servants balance each other out in that scene.
I figure I have one last chance to get out my underlying assumption on the series
