What can the character possibly bring to the story this late in the game? Graendal has been a fun character to me throughout the series, but I can't help but feel like her plot has run it's course. Why have her reborn in a hideous body, but seemly still herself (no mind trap etc), she's essentially a Mask of Mirrors away from her old self. She doesn't even seem to be all that worse for the wear as she clearly is still willing to voice her opinions. I was rather hoping we'd see her as a little sex slave to someone! Instead she's probably still plotting her move to get back into high enough status to grab the Nae'Bliss title.
Perhaps she'll have a glorious death scene in the LB
Perhaps she'll have a glorious death scene in the LB
I'm puzzled as well, but I remember how surprised I was Graendal wouldn't be there for the LB, when the Apocalypse parallels pointed to the opposite. Still, I had written her off as anything more than a slave to someone, and that was a maybe.
It's a bit late for mind-games, without any prior set up anyway, unless it's the brutally effective Graendal we get to see, not the Graendal playing elaborate psychological games.
I'm still convinced Brandon went off path with her in TOM, ie: he added her artificially to Perrin's storyline because he wanted a Chosen involved in one of the two storylines where Jordan, when the plan was one book with all the pre-epiphany storylines running in parallel) meant to use only Slayer without a patron (it's Cyndane who was trying to get Perrin killed, I'm sure, and Moghedien who I'm sure was still running the people behind the BA/Shiaine group and preparing the attack on the city rather had agents trying to eliminate Mat). I'm sure Jordan had Graendal picked up by SH after she failed Moridin with Rand in AD, not after yet another failure with Perrin. I'm pretty sure her return transmigrated as Hessalam is RJ's intent, though. She may not be the last transmigrated Chosen, in the sense that I get the feeling if anyone dies without being balefired in the LB, the DO is gonna bring that Chosen back for more immediately. I'm still hoping we get to see one transmigration scene, actually.
Globally, I think we may get to see the Chosen leading armies, ordering around those who do, or attempting to perform assassinations, compulsions, sabotage and such from now on.
A possible target for Graendal would be Egwene, Nynaeve and co., but I get the feeling it's Moghedien who've been tasked with taking over what's left of Mesaana's (speculated) hidden army near Aes Sedai. I think it's for her skills performing sabotage and running infiltrators and such Demandred has asked Moridin for her. She's not to be a general, Moridin has spoken of monitoring an army for Demandred. It's got to concern female channelers and it's go to be something Mesaana was meant to do with Demandred in the LB (though Mesaana could have inherited an extra task beside the BA following Semirhage's demise, and thus this relates instead to the Seanchan... until the Seanchan becomes involved with Egwene and co and it concerns everyone.. the women side anyway).
A possible mission for Graendal (and fitting, since she's a bit responsible for what happened) would be to find, rescue and Heal - or failing that to kill Mesaana who's brain damaged... We were also told Graendal has plenty of spies and agents in the Tower, agents who found out what Mesaana was up to in TV and who she disguised herself as... even the Head of the BA failed at that! Graendal is more likely to have compelled spies among non-channelers in the staff, novices and such than among sisters, thus the odds are good they're still all operational after the BA purge...
For that matter, Graendal could be the one running DF networks through TG (even though that appears to have been part of Moghedien's and Cyndane's duties), as we know she had the largest ones, and we know they ranged far from AD, and even from the ranks of DF...
So I guess if I'm completely off about the army Moghedien is supposed to monitor (ie: it's got nothing to do with TV), then I expect Graendal to be sent to the Tower/leaders, and if I'm right about Moghedien taking over.. let's call them "Mesaana's Children" plus the BA, I guess I expect Graendal to be mostly in charge of the infiltrated DF and spies everywhere, of kidnappings of key people, and of course of various compel-and-run missions on key people. Obvious targets would be the rulers after Merrilor. Compulsion of the right people during TG could really do a lot of damages. If Graendal was sent to what we expect could be the "War Council" as a serving woman, she could really do nasty things to those she pretends to serve wine and such to... dangerous given the presence of AS, but Graendal is daring.
And yeah, hopefully she'll get a better death scene that her pseudo-one was!
