He is the Dragon, after all. And what is a Dragon in this series, but a serpent (albeit with legs). Plus, in tEotW, the Shadow indicated wanting to blind the Great Serpent. Why would they want to blind the Dark One? However, it was a major plot point in the series that Rand had been blinded by the Shadow.
