After the Cleansing there is a POV from Cadsuane where she describes "all that chaos" of saidin, which she experienced when she linked with one of the Asha'man. I think there is another POV from a different Aes Sedai in KoD that describes the "fire and ice" of saidin, as well.
I took this to mean that a man can sense saidar when linked with a woman and be able to weave flows with it. And a woman would be able to sense and work with saidin.

You are correct, if you remember when Rand first linked with Nynaeve he commented on how alien Saidar was to him (and Nynaeve made a similar comment about Saidin). Once a male and female link they can use both halves of the power with much greater effect. They are like oil and water in some respects but in others they work together to make something greater than the sum of its parts. Also, the person who leads in a mixed gender circle has to be able to use both flows, otherwise how could there be one leader?
