Though some of it is second hand, my impression of ASoIaF is that it DEFINES "gratuitous violence."

He just found it too graphic and violent for him to go on reading the series, otherwise he loved it.
Said so in one of the recorded Q&A, when commenting about what he called a "GRRM moment" he had just written into the last WOT book.

"Yes, this incestuous sex scene is pretty extreme, but how can I make it MORE extreme... oh, shove a prepubescent boy off a tower onto a stone courtyard; perfect! "
One could argue it is not WHOLLY gratuitous, since both ends of that incident figure prominently in the plot, but, on the other hand, if much of the plot revolves around incestuous sex and attempts to brutally murder children, is that an "interesting" story, or just a sensationalized/titillating one? I can certainly see Sandersons point; without the parts of ASoIaF suitable for snuff films and/or porn it fits within a single volume.

Is this true: Robert Jordan wrote the first three books of Game Of Thrones?

In a board filled with crap, this still wins the prize as one of the stupidest ideas out there.
